Kay owned horses over the decades who won countless Indiana Quarter Horse Association year-end titles, as well as awards at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress and the AQHA World Championship Show. As a rider, Kay last competed in a walk-trot western pleasure class in September 2019 at the age of 81. She also enjoyed years of memory-making adventures with a couple of her closest friends, Janet Bryant and Robbylou Endres, with whom Kay was having dinner when she became critically ill on February 22,2020.

Kay's husband, Phil, died in November 1988, which was not long after having lost their eldest son, Mike, in July of the same year.
