Janet DeJarnatt

Janet M. DeJarnatt , 76, of Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel. She was born on November 27, 1945 to the late Edmund and Eleanore (Frankiewicz) Rybarczyk in Chicago, Illinois.

Jan attended George Rogers Clark High School graduating in 1963; Indiana State University graduating in 1967 where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, Gamma Gamma Chapter; and Indiana University graduating in 1971. She taught four years at Lake Ridge Schools in Gary, IN, and developed their Head Start Program. Jan owned The Wise Owl Early Learning Center, an educational preschool in Merrillville, IN, for ten years.

Jan taught 24 years at Forest Hill Elementary in Noblesville Schools where she developed and led their summer nature program and was a sponsor of their Science Fair, Computer Club, Young Astronauts, and other clubs. She was also a supervising teacher for many student teachers through the years. Jan was active with the Indiana State Teachers Association, Noblesville Teacher’s Forum, and was a past-President of the Hamilton County Retired Teachers.

Although teaching and family were her two loves, she also believed in giving back to the community in many ways. Jan was a volunteer for many years at Riverview Hospital and with Hamilton County SERTOMA. She served as a board member with the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation and with the Friends of Hamilton County Parks. Jan was a vice-committee person for the Hamilton County Democratic Party and worked with and supported the Hamilton County Election Office. She served as former local President of Sigma Kappa Sorority Indianapolis Alumni Chapter, Sigma Beta Philanthropic Sorority, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was also a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority SW Florida Alumni Chapter.

Jan was an active member of the Our Lady of Grace Community in Noblesville, IN, for over 40 years and was also a member of St Finbarr Parish in Naples, FL. At Our Lady of Grace, she was a former Chairman of the Education committee and was currently served on the Tithing committee in addition to being a Greeter and Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Alter Rosary Society.

Jan loved the outdoors and her snowbird move to the Port of the Islands in Naples, FL, allowed her to watch the alligators, bears, birds and other animals in the warmth of Florida away from the Indiana winters. She loved watching the manatees and dolphins while going through the water of the 10,000 Islands. Jan loved to travel, enjoying trips to England, Ireland, Russia, the Baltic countries, Mexico, South America, Canada, Cuba, Bermuda, Alaska, and the shore excursions while on many cruises. Her favorite trips were those closer to home: the state parks and out of the way places in Indiana and Florida. Jan had said that her two favorite cruises were on the Mississippi River in a steam powered paddle wheeler from Memphis to New Orleans on her 25th wedding anniversary, and from Minnesota to New Orleans on her 50th wedding anniversary.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas DeJarnatt, who she married on November 18, 1967; daughter, Susan (Daniel) Walker; grandsons, Jeremiah and Jermon; sister, Judy (Gerald) Novak; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
