Our beloved Valerie VanCleave Westbrook passed away on October 10, 2025, at the age of 84. In her final week, family members gathered around her, both in person and through FaceTime.

Valerie’s grandchildren affectionately called her “Honey,” a name embraced by the entire family. More than a term of endearment, “Honey” truly reflected her character-her sweetness, kindness, generosity, humor, and spirited nature made her the Queen Bee of the family. The love she held for her family was immeasurable, and her absence will be deeply felt. Like her mother, Vivian, she prioritized family above all else, celebrating every occasion-from holidays and birthdays to ballgames, weddings, and graduations-regardless of location. Whenever a babysitter was needed, Honey was the first to lend a hand. Her greatest wish was always for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, and all their spouses to be happy and healthy. She loved them unconditionally.

Valerie was born in Paoli, Indiana, where she was involved in high school life. Many friendships from that time, including her "El mob," lasted a lifetime. She married Dick Gasaway (deceased), with whom she had two children: Rick Gasaway and Kim Gasaway Snyder. In 1975, the family moved to Richmond, Indiana, but Valerie stayed connected to her Paoli roots, attending high school reunions and visiting friends.

In 1985, Valerie married John Westbrook (deceased 2022), who shared her love for family. Together, they enjoyed a vibrant social life, traveling across the U.S., cruising with friends, and hosting the 500 Race Day Party in Richmond.

HP Chemicals' brightest day was when they hired Valerie. Her career with this company was marked by excellence. As a sales representative for janitorial supplies across eastern Indiana and western Ohio, she transformed an underperforming territory into one of the company's most successful. Her work ethic, positivity, and people skills were keys to her success, summed up by her motto: “It’s all about customer service.”

A devoted volunteer, Valerie served countless civic organizations. She was a driving force on the Women’s Fund Board, raising grants to empower girls and women in Richmond. She also volunteered for Indiana Women in Need, supporting Hoosiers undergoing breast cancer treatment, and dedicated years to the Richmond School System’s Study Buddy Program, mentoring students toward scholarships and success.

Valerie treasured her wide circle of friends, cherishing every relationship. She relished shopping trips, joyous celebrations, and other adventures. She was truly a blessing to everyone who knew her. An exceptional friend, Valerie was always present during challenging times-offering compassion, unwavering support, and advice only when asked. Her quick wit brought both laughter and comfort, even in the most difficult moments.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents, Voris and Vivian VanCleave, and husband, John Westbrook. She is survived by her son, Rick Gasaway (Julie) of Chicago; daughter, Kim Gasaway Snyder (Jeff) of Fishers; stepdaughter, Jessica Leonard of Atlanta; sister, Vicki VanCleave (Deb) of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and three stepgrandchildren.

A private burial will take place this Spring at Stampers Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Paoli.
