Thomas Edward Dempster, 94, of Shelby Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, in his home in Fishers, Indiana surrounded by family. He leaves behind the love of his life of 60 years, Renée; his daughter, Susan (Jon) Dempster-Wood of Royal Oak, MI; his son, Andy (Christy) Dempster of Carmel, IN; his granddaughters, Sydney (Ben) Brooks and Spencer Wood; and his great-grandson, Porter Brooks.
Tom was born in Ferndale, MI, to Thomas Ray Dempster and Helen Vera Dempster. He grew up in Royal Oak with his brothers, John “Jack” and “little brother Bruce,” who, along with their families, remained close throughout their lives, including fond memories of their annual Dempster sauerkraut-making tradition.
After graduating from Royal Oak High School, Tom attended Michigan State University, which cemented his lifelong love of the Spartans. He then left to join the Navy and serve aboard the USS Sea Leopard submarine. After his service, Tom completed his degree at Eastern Michigan University. He went on to dedicate many years to teaching social studies at Warren High School.
A Spartan through and through, Tom followed Michigan State athletics with unwavering loyalty. Green and white ran deep, and he enjoyed years of tailgating with family and meeting new friends. He also took great pride in his Scottish heritage and had a special fondness for bagpipe music. Tom enjoyed snowbirding in Gulf Shores, daily “tea time,” watching his favorite movies and shows, and answering all of our history questions, remaining sharp as a whip until the very end.
Above all, Tom loved his family. Together he and Renée built a family grounded in love, laughter, and tradition. He loved being “Papa” and, alongside “Nana,” treasured spending quality time over the years with his granddaughters and holding his new great-grandson for the first time. His legacy lives on in all who knew and loved him and in the memories that will be treasured always.
Go Green!
Inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In keeping with Tom’s wishes, no public service will be held.
