In Loving Memory of Sonia Marcia Griffith
With deep love and heartfelt gratitude, we celebrate the beautiful life of Sonia Marcia Griffith, who peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 86, in Carmel, Indiana.
Sonia was born on December 31, 1939, in Belize City, Belize, to Mavis Arnold and Hughbert Brannon. She was the third of four children, growing up alongside her sisters, Janice McLaughlin and Iris Brannon, and her younger brother, Hugh Brannon. She was preceded in death by her sisters and is lovingly remembered by her brother Hugh. She also leaves behind her step-sister, Gloria Flowers, and step-brother, Gilroy.
She attended Queen Street Baptist School in Belize City, where the foundation of her lifelong love for learning and community began. As a young woman, she met the love of her life, Owen Lewis Griffith. Together they built a life centered on love, faith, and family, and were blessed with six children: Elvis, Betty Jean, Martha, Joycelin, Sonnette, and Owen Jr.
In 1969, Sonia immigrated to the United States, embracing new opportunities while carrying with her the warmth, resilience, and rich traditions of her Belizean heritage. No matter where she lived, she made every house feel like home.
Sonia found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved singing, dancing, knitting, cooking meals that brought family together, and faithfully watching her favorite soap operas. She had a servant’s heart and found great happiness in caring for others, especially children. Her kindness, gentle spirit, and welcoming smile made everyone feel loved and accepted.
Family was Sonia’s greatest treasure. She poured her heart into raising her children, celebrating her grandchildren, and nurturing lifelong relationships with family and friends. Her legacy is one of unconditional love, quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Joycelin Griffith, Sonnette M. (Carl Gibson) Griffith, and Owen L. Griffith, Jr., and her stepdaughter, Ernestine Reeves.
She was a proud and loving grandmother to Tyrone (Wura) Trebble, Brandon Trebble, April Griffith, Alexandria Griffith, James Simmons, Devita Griffith, Yakera, Darius Gibson, Joshua (Shemeca) Griffith, Jennifer Griffith, Alyssa Griffith, Aaliyah Griffith, and Owen Griffith III, and was also blessed with many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever remember the love she shared so freely.
Sonia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Owen Lewis Griffith; her parents, Mavis Arnold and Hughbert Brannon; her son, Elvis N. Griffith; her daughters, Betty Jean Griffith and Martha Griffith; and her sisters, Janice McLaughlin and Iris Brannon.
Though her absence is deeply felt, Sonia’s love continues to live on in every life she touched. Her compassion, strength, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family have left an enduring legacy that will be treasured for generations to come. While we grieve her passing, we also celebrate a remarkable life that was lived with grace, generosity, and love.
Private family services will be held. Burial will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis.
