September 5, 1941 – March 19, 2026
Avie Halvorson passed from this life on March 19, 2026, following a brief illness. She died the way she wanted, in her home in Fishers, Indiana. Before she passed, she was cared for by an amazing hospice team who made her final days as comfortable as possible.
Born on September 5, 1941, at her family’s farm north of Noblesville, Avie was the fourth and youngest child of Gerald Huffman and Eva White Huffman. Avie graduated from Noblesville High School in 1960 and then attended Bob Jones University, where she met Daniel C. Halvorson. They married in 1963 and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Their daughters Amy and Holly were born in 1965 and 1967, respectively.
Avie graduated from DeKalb College in 1975 and became a registered nurse. She worked at Emory University Hospital until she returned to Noblesville in 1982. She worked in the Riverview Hospital Intensive Care Unit for 33 years until she retired from nursing in 2016.
Avie’s Christian faith was central to her daily life. She was a member of Legacy Bible Church, where she basked in the fellowship of dear friends, tended the peace lilies, and sang alto in the choir. She also loved her Bible study group and served as occasional hostess. She completed the Master Gardener course in 2017 and enjoyed working on projects with other gardeners as well as tending flowers around her home in the woods near the White River. Avie was also skilled in the culinary arts. She loved trying new recipes and was renowned for serving delicious meals on beautifully set tables for family and friends.
In addition to her loving family, Avie was blessed with many caring friends and neighbors. She made new friends wherever she went and cherished her lifelong friendships. Avie hosted extended family Christmas parties for many years; in her later years, she celebrated holiday gatherings with her niece Kathy Swackhamer and her husband Mike, along with their children. Her friends Shari Ferris and Joy Weiss were especially devoted to her and offered their loving, helpful presence in her final days.
Avie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: sister Barbara Ellen Barker (and brother-in-law Morris Barker); two brothers, Harold Huffman and David Huffman; and half-sister Helen MacDonald. She was also preceded in death by her former husband Dan Halvorson. She is survived by her daughters and their families—Amy Halvorson Miller, husband Marty, and their sons Henry and Theo; Holly Halvorson Southern, husband Randy, and their children Amy, Brady, and Matt—her sisters-in-law Sue Huffman and Dixie Huffman, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation and a short service will be held at Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary, 12010 Allisonville Rd, Fishers, on Sunday, March 29. Visitation begins at 2:00 PM, followed by a short service at 3:00. Private burial will be on Monday, March 30, at 2:00 PM at Prairie Baptist Church Cemetery.
