Russell Ralph Zimmerman

Russell Ralph Zimmerman, 71, of Zionsville, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in Zionsville, Indiana. He was born on August 16, 1953, to Ralph Henry and Mabel Rose (Asherman) Zimmerman in Chicago, Illinois.

Russ proudly served in the United States Army at Fort Knox during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he attended Vincennes University and IUPUI. He sold and installed boilers, was a project manager at several construction sites, and studied hard to get his real estate broker’s license. He was a devoted father to Brittney and Chris while coaching soccer, taking family vacations notably to Myrtle Beach and Gatlinburg, and sharing all the joys and heartbreaks of their lives as they grew up. He was so proud of the adults they have become. His passions included cars, guns, keeping up with Fox News, and working as an industrial real estate broker. Whether he was pheasant hunting in Nebraska, adoring his pride and joy, a red 1966 Mustang, or putting real estate deals together, Russ was always an enthusiastic, positive, and good person. He was selfless and always put others in front of himself. He enjoyed many adventures while traveling with his wife, Cheryl, and they were looking forward to many more. His biggest joy of all was visiting with and spending time (and FaceTime) with his grandchildren. He had nothing but big hopes and love in his heart for each of them.

Words cannot express the sorrow felt by the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lynn Zimmerman; daughter, Brittney Lee (Matt) Nevitt; son, Christopher Russell (Shelby) Zimmerman; grandchildren, Cohen Paul, Averie Jade, Norah Lynn, Emma Lee, Kenlie Rae, (and one on the way!); and stepdaughter, Sierra Ashley Gibson.

In addition to his parents, his brother, David, and godson, Michael Kaforke, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Lee Zimmerman.

Although Russ’ physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing, and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion in all that we do. We ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

At Russ’ request, there will be no funeral services.
