Richard John Farrell, 92, of Noblesville, IN, formerly from Worcester, MA, died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 after a battle with stomach cancer surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Lucy E. (Gadaire) Farrell; two daughters, Kathleen A. (Farrell) Corrigan of Noblesville, and Ellen C. (Farrell/Risotti) Hinkle and her husband Lonnie Hinkle of Brownsburg, IN; and the pride and joy of his life, his two grandchildren, Gabriella Lucy-Ann Risotti of Indianapolis, IN and Colby Richard Thomas Risotti of Brownsburg, IN. He also leaves three step-grandchildren, Travis, Catherine and Samantha Hinkle; his sister, Pauline C. (Farrell) Wambach of Auburn, MA; sister-in-law, Lillian Farrell of Auburn, MA; and many nieces & nephews.
Richard was the son of Thomas E. Farrell, and Florence I. (Haggerty) Farrell of Worcester. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary (Farrell) Quercio; his brother, Paul T. Farrell; and sister, Frances A. (Farrell) Phelan.
He was born in Worcester, MA on January 7, 1931. Richard attended South High School in Worcester, and enlisted in the Army in 1948 during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in Alaska, San Francisco, CA, and then spent 44 days sailing from San Francisco to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and then on to England, where he was stationed for the next 20 months. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1951 after four years of service to his country.
Richard worked at the Wyman Gordon Plants in Grafton and Worcester, MA. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was manager of the West Boylston Bowl tenpin lanes and Bowling Green Central Street candlepin house before managing the Thunderbird Bowl in Auburn, MA for the next 25 years, retiring in 1991. After retirement, Richard drove part time for Yellow Cab in Worcester for seven years. He moved to Indiana in 2004 to be near his two daughters and grandchildren.
Richard loved the game of golf beginning from when he caddied at Worcester Country Club in MA at the age of 14. He started to play on a regular basis at 25. He was an avid golfer for some 65 years, at one point having a handicap of 2. After moving to IN he joined a group of retirees at Fox Prairie Golf Course in Noblesville until 2022. He enjoyed the course and the friendship of his fellow golfers and the pro.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with services at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, in Noblesville.
