Send a Sympathy Card
Rian (Rica) Anna Maria Josefina Steerneman Layne passed from life into eternal rest at the age of 73 on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Rica was born in Vriezeveen, Netherlands to Willem and Virgien Steerneman on January 11, 1952. She was the eldest of eight children. In 1979, Rica came to the United States with a missionary family. She chose the American name Joyce from the word "rejoice." Her faith in Jesus as her Good Shepherd was her guiding light for the past fifty years. She was always sharing her faith with those around her. She started and maintained a mail ministry for decades - writing frequently to friends, relatives, church members, neighbors and the elderly. She especially had a heart for the shut in.
Rica is survived by six siblings: Anja, Tiny, Jan (Jose), Willem (Marian), Peter and Thera (Marcel). She also has many nieces and nephews that she loved deeply. Preceding her in death are her parents and her sister Virgien (Henk).
Rica's greatest joys in life were her daughters and grandchildren to whom she was known affectionately as "Oma." Her daughters are Tabitha (Rusty), Sarah (Chris) and Rachel (Ryan). Her grandchildren are Ella (17), Carter (14), Weston (11), Coen (9), Wesley (9), and Jolie (4).
We will miss her dearly, but rejoice in the knowledge that she is now in her eternal home with her Savior.
"For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." - 1 Thessalonians 4:14
The Layne Family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Funeral Home with Rica's care.
