Mary D. Babb, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 25, 2023 surrounded by the love and care of her family, friends, and devoted healthcare team.

Mary was born on March 27, 1954 to Leo and Virginia (Handy) Babb in Anderson, Indiana. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Anderson High School in 1972. Mary graduated from Ball State University with bachelor of science degrees in natural resources and secondary education. She then earned a Masters Degree in Education while teaching biology at Connersville High School. She later moved to Indianapolis where she taught 7th grade science at Lincoln Middle School in Pike Township, retiring in 2013 after over 30 years as an educator.

Mary’s passion for music and acting was evident in her many pursuits whether it be performing in civic theater, directing school plays, singing at the weddings of friends, or playing the piano. Mary enjoyed traveling, and ventured to Europe several times and throughout the US.

Mary often shared fond memories of her happy years growing up, and in particular, like to reminisce about spending time with her grandparents at their lake cottage. She loved to be near the water, and in her adult years, enjoyed trips to Edisto Island.

Mary was a master gardener who resided in Broad Ripple Village for many years where she tended a beautiful garden and pursued many hobbies including jewelry making, antique collecting, painting, needle crafts, and reading. Mary routinely had a book or two in progress and eagerly lent books or offered book recommendations to family and friends.  In addition to books, she freely shared her wit and wisdom. Lots of laughter was to be expected when you spent time with Mary.

Mary is survived by her mother, Virginia; sisters, Reah and Annie; brother, Jaime; sister-in-law, Denisa; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Leo; and her brother, David.

Mary’s family and friends wish to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of Hamilton Trace Senior Living Community and Paradigm Hospice for their loving care and support.
