Line Berr Childress (pronounced “Lean”), age 95, passed away peacefully in her home on October 2, 2026 in Westfield, Indiana.
Born on July 18, 1931, in Ambarès, France, Line was named after Charles Lindbergh, who famously crossed the Atlantic in 1927 on the Spirit of St. Louis. She brought the elegance, creativity, and warmth of her homeland to everything she did throughout her long and beautiful life. It was while working as a personal assistant at an American military base in France that she met the absolute love of her life, Dr. Robert C. Childress (1929-2022). Their love story spanned decades and formed the foundation of a large, deeply devoted family.
Line was an incredibly talented artist who mastered the delicate craft of china painting, a testament to her patience and eye for beauty. Her artistic spirit also came alive in the kitchen. A formidable cook, she effortlessly blended her French heritage with American traditions, creating mouthwatering, creative combinations that brought everyone to the table. She loved staying active, whether she was playing a spirited game of tennis, watching professional matches, or spending time swimming. Line also had a profound love for dogs; her family takes great comfort in knowing that her former Bernese, Amie, has been rehomed to an angel named Donna, where Amie is living her very best life as all dogs should.
Above all, Line was the absolute epitome of motherhood. She was the ultimate “mother hen," happiest when her family was gathered close around her, loving them completely and through and through with words of encouragement.
Line is survived by her beloved children: Eric Childress, Sonia Childress-Hoek, Tina Childress-Sanger, and Michelle Childress-Nickum. She is also survived by her eight cherished grandchildren: Morgan, Madeline, Nicholas, Matthew, Alex, Sydney, Melina, and Pierce; and her six beautiful great-grandchildren: Mosha, Maverick, Maine, Meadow, Emerik, and Noelle Lina. Her legacy of grace, love, and fierce dedication to her family will be forever cherished.
