Listen to Obituary

Kenneth Mitchell Ruppel age 57, passed away on April 28, 2026, surrounded by love. Born on April 30, 1968, he lived with a rare kind of purpose-one rooted in curiosity, service, adventure, and devotion to the people (and pup) who mattered most. The brighter the light, the shorter the life.

In October 2022, Ken Ruppel was diagnosed with Stage IV cholangiocarcinoma. While this disease became part of his story, it never defined him. He met it the way he met everything: with grit, intelligence, and determination-researching every possible path toward a cure, advocating fiercely, and continuing to live intentionally, fully, and with heart.

From an early age, Ken built his life around values that last. He spent 18 years working within the Boy Scouts, he was proud of earning the honor of Eagle Scout-a reflection of his character: prepared, dependable, and quietly courageous. Those values carried him through adulthood and into every community he joined.

He attended Central Michigan University, where he was a proud member of Sigma Tau Gamma (Sig-Tau), forming friendships that added laughter, loyalty, and lifelong stories to his life. He also had a gift for teaching and connecting across cultures-serving as a professor in the Semester at Sea program, where he helped students learn not only from textbooks, but from the world itself.

Service mattered to him. He volunteered during the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, showing up with the kind of steady enthusiasm that made people feel supported and welcomed. And in one of those only-in-his-life moments, he danced on the field in the 2006 Super Bowl halftime show-proving that joy and bravery can look like stepping into the spotlight when the moment calls. He reveled in sharing this memory annually during every super bowl halftime show.

If you wanted to understand Ken, you could also meet him on the water. Sailing wasn’t simply a hobby-it was his element. He set a goal many only dream about and achieved it with pride: 25 Port Huron to Mackinac Island races, earning his “Old Goat” milestone and savoring every mile. He owned his boat, Recess, and spent 20 years sailing on Dolphin, along with races on Margaret Rintoul IV, Bahari, and Carol J-each boat name holding its own chapter of camaraderie, challenge, and triumph.

In recent years, he bought a J/24 Sweet Baby J and became a member of the Indianapolis Sailing Club, where the water continued to give him what it always had: clarity, peace, and friendship. It wasn’t just sailing-he built community there, taught classes, and made new friends. He had a dream to build a program to introduce youth to the joys of sailing. Being on the water steadied him, strengthened him, and brought him joy.

He also loved music-the kind you feel in your chest and remember forever. He was especially fond of Future Islands and Cake, bands that matched his spirit: thoughtful, unique, and undeniably alive. Most recently he discovered who his biological father was, a missing part to his story. This helped him understand his love of music, as Dan was a musician. He received a gift of many CD’s with his music that helped fill his days during infusions and sitting in the sun with the cd player going in the background.

Above all, Ken was a family man. He cherished traditions-especially the annual Indianapolis 500 with his dad, John Ruppel, and the many family trips tied to the St. Pete races, where time together mattered more than any itinerary. Among his fondest memories were the Michigan family cabin trips he shared growing up with his immediate and extended family. He cherished his many nieces and nephews and took joy in celebrating every milestone with them, from games and graduations to new vehicles to career dreams. He lived in a way that made family feel like home-wherever they were.

In the summer of 2007, he met Dawn, and in true fashion, he didn’t just invite her into his life-he introduced her to his favorite parts of it. He shared his love of Mackinac Island, a place that became woven into their story. They were married on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City in 2010, beginning a marriage built on shared laughter, intentional living, and deep devotion.

Together, they planned “intentional trips”-not just vacations, but memories: Napa, Charleston, New York City, North Captiva (Florida), Washington, D.C., and more. They honored Friday night date nights, and in a tradition as sweet as it is telling, they took car selfies to document those Fridays-small snapshots of a love that showed up consistently, joyfully, and on purpose.

He loved his dog, Molly, and the simple rhythm of walks around the block-the kind of ordinary moments that, in hindsight, are everything.

Ken leaves behind a legacy that is equal parts adventure and steadiness: a man who served, taught, sailed, danced, loved deeply, and kept choosing hope. He had a compassionate spirit and a genuine gift for making everyone feel welcome. To all who read this, he touched countless lives, always finding a way to connect with people wherever he went. His life reminds us to set big goals, treasure small traditions, and show up fully for the people we love.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Dawn; his father John Ruppel, and his brother, John (Lisa) Ruppel, plus several others including many special nieces, nephews, friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Chris Ruppel.
