Listen to Obituary

Karen Ann (Janik) Hurm, born February 18, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away on January 25, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family. Karen built a life shaped by joy, faith, and the people she held close.

She was the beloved wife of Larry Hurm, and previously the wife of Dale Needleman. She was a devoted mother to Sarah and Eric, mother‑in‑law to Meaghan, and a loving stepmother to Nick and Kelsey (Ryan). She was also the proud grandmother of Arthur, who brought her endless happiness.

Karen was the cherished daughter of the late John and Dolores Janik, and the dear sister of Bob (Terese) Janik.

She was a dedicated, longtime employee of HSE Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria. She took great pride in her work and often joined in the lighthearted antics of “lunch lady land,” bringing humor and camaraderie to her coworkers.

Karen’s Catholic faith was a steady and meaningful part of her life, offering her comfort and purpose.

Throughout her life, Karen found joy in staying active and creating memories with the people she loved. She especially enjoyed live music, outdoor concerts, visiting wineries, riding her bike and playing tennis, and the fun and excitement of casino getaway trips. Karen never missed a chance to save a buck — Whether she was proudly announcing a buy‑one‑get‑one deal or pulling out a stack of clipped coupons like they were playing cards, her bargain‑hunting skills became one of her most endearing (and funniest) trademarks.

She will be deeply missed, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Details on the service will follow.
