Karen Backs

Karen Backs, age 62, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with aggressive cancer that took her from us far too soon.

Born in Marion, Indiana, Karen was the daughter of Morris and Linda Underwood. She later graduated from Eastbrook High School, carrying with her the values of hard work, kindness, and devotion to family that would guide her throughout her life.

Karen’s heart was rooted in caring for others, both through her many years as a nurse and in the love she gave so freely to her family. Nothing brought her more pride or joy than the lives and accomplishments of those she loved most.

In her younger years, Karen lived in the country, where she developed a deep love for animals, especially her many pets and her beloved horse, Surral. In her teenage years, she began working at McDonald’s, where she later met the love of her life, Rick. Together they built a life centered on love and family, welcoming their first son, Matthew.

Karen then worked in the billing and accounting department at Devoe’s in Marion, where she and Rick welcomed their second son, Mitchell. She later returned to school in her late 20s to attend Indiana University Kokomo, where she earned her nursing degree. She began her nursing career at Marion General Hospital before continuing her work at The Heart Center at 106th and Meridian, where she loved being a nurse and took great pride in the comfort and compassion she gave to her patients. She dedicated almost 30 years to the profession, often making her hour-plus commute alongside her close friend, Gina Cox, reflecting both her dedication and the meaningful friendships she cherished throughout her life.

Karen will be dearly remembered by her devoted husband of 44 years, Rick Backs, her children Matthew (Melanie) and Mitchell (Tylee), and her precious grandchildren Mirabelle, Leo, Eila, and Aden. She is also survived by her siblings Cheryl, Pamela, and Stephen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Linda Underwood and her mother-in-law, Lois Backs.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17102 Spring Mill Road, in Westfield on Thursday, May 21st at 12 pm, preceded by a viewing starting at 10 am. A luncheon will follow the service and all will take place at the Church. In accordance with her wishes, Karen will be cremated, and burial will take place at a later date.
