Joretta "Jet" Oneal Gilbert, 91, of Noblesville, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Wellbrooke of Westfield. Jet was born on a farm in Benton County on June 1, 1932 to Roy and Ada (Nelson) Oneal. She attended elementary school at Wadena and was a 1950 graduate of Oxford High School. After graduation she was employed at National Homes Corporation in Lafayette as a secretary.
On October 12, 1952 she married her beloved Bob Gilbert who was serving in the United States Air Force. He preceded her in death on January 3, 1981. She was also preceded in death by their youngest son, Douglas, who died on August 11, 2014.
Jet's sister, Jean Coffman of Mulberry, Indiana and two brothers, Nels Oneal of West Lafayette, Indiana and Don Oneal of Hetland, South Dakota also preceded her in death.
Jet is survived by her son, Michael (Ann) of Valrico, FL; her daughter, Kathy (Jay) Adams of Noblesville, IN; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Gilbert of Fishers, IN; grandchildren, Stephen (Courtney) of Nolensville, TN, Melinda Jennings of Valrico, FL, John (Brittany) of LaPlatat, MD, Matthew (Sarah) Adams of Tampa, FL, Michael (Jennifer) Adams of Westfield, IN, Griffin (Ana) Gilbert of VA, and Kiley Gilbert of Arcadia, IN; great-grandchildren, Caleb and Lily Gilbert, Danica and Payton Jennings, Camden, Aiden, and Leah Gilbert, Nash and Lola Adams, Elise and Everitt Adams, and Sandler Robinson; brother, Wayne (Bernice) Oneal of Oxford; sisters-in-law, Cindy Oneal of West Lafayette and Jean Oneal of Hetland, SD; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends.
The Gilberts raised their family in the South Bend/Mishawaka area and when Jet retired, she moved back home to Oxford. In 2020, due to failing eyesight, Jet moved to Sanders Glen Assisted Living in Westfield. Jet was employed by the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation for 30 years as the athletic director's secretary and then secretary to the superintendent of schools.
Jet was an avid reader all her life and music was always present. Jet was a sports enthusiast as well. She attended and sang in the choir at the Granger Presbyterian Church.
After Bob received his degree, one of Jet's greatest prides was being awarded the PHT degree from Indiana State University.
Services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola at 2:30 pm (eastern time) on January 19, 2024 with long time dear friend, Christopher Woods of Granger, leading the celebration of Jet's life.
