Jay Butler

Jay Butler, 68, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at his home in Indianapolis. He was born on January 21, 1946 to Joseph C. and Doris E. (McCartney) in Elkhart, Indiana. Jay married Jean Goehring on January 30, 1971, spending 43 wonderful years together.
During his youth, Mr. Butler was very active in 4-H. He was a 1964 graduate of Shelbyville High School, serving as class president. While attending Purdue University, he was the Director of Student Government Services and active in FarmHouse Fraternity. Jay received his M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in 1970. He went on to an accomplished career with Eli Lilly, retiring in February of 2005 after 35 years with the company. He fulfilled his retirement goals by riding his bicycle across the United States, traveling the world, and by being a frequent caregiver to his grandchildren.
Jay was a devoted member of Castleton United Methodist Church in Indianapolis where he was active in Stephen Ministry, youth programs and missions. He was an advocate for the homeless population in Indianapolis, working with C.H.I.P. and the Indy Homeless Connect event. Above all, Jay was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Butler; children, Brad (Jodi) Butler, Keith (Erin) Butler, and Jill (Andy) Canada; grandchildren, Abby and William Butler; Samuel, Benjamin, and Sarah Butler; and Kate and Alli Canada; sister, Brenda (Ed) Morin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Luke Butler.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary, 12010 Allisonville Road, in Fishers. Services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Castleton United Methodist Church, 7160 Shadeland Avenue, in Indianapolis, with additional visitation being held one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hamilton Southeastern School Foundation (Luke Butler Scholarship) 12451 Brooks School Road, Fishers IN 46037, or to Castleton United Methodist Church, 7160 Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46256.
