James Lewis “Jim” Pettit, 86, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at his home. He was born on October 5, 1939, to Ross and Eunice (Mabry) Pettit in Newport, Arkansas. Jim graduated from Newport High School in 1957.
Following his graduation, Jim attended the University of Arkansas. While in college, he was awarded a scholarship to study Agricultural Engineering. Jim participated in Air Force ROTC and spent time in Texas training. In 1962, Jim graduated, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. His career started at the University of Arkansas Animal Hospital. His interest expanded into swine reproduction at other operations.
As a young man, Jim was trained as a carpenter. This training served him well, as he spent many hours building homes for his family. This sparked his passion for construction, and he started his own business, Razorback of Indiana, Inc., which he owned and operated for many years. His love for animals and the community connections he made led him to assist farmers with building construction, upgrading, and enhancing their farms in the community.
Jim was a long-standing, devoted member of the Church of Christ from age 12 until his passing. During his time with the church, he held several leadership roles.
Jim was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who passed many life lessons on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his childhood sweetheart, Carolyn Ann Pettit, whom he married on May 30, 1959, with the celebration of 66 years of marriage. Jim is also survived by his son, Jim (Debra) Pettit, his daughter, Teri (Roger) Hall, and his grandchildren, J. R. Pettit, Chris Pettit, Kirbie Woods, and Logan Woods, as well as his great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Chloe, and Ross.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm with services at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, in Noblesville. Mitchell Haynes will officiate the service. Burial will be at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Green Valley Church of Christ, PO Box 575, Noblesville, Indiana 46060, which will further Jim’s dedication to God’s work.
