Gwendolyn Tetrick

Gwendolyn Geraldine (Potter) Tetrick , 71, of Noblesville, passed away on October 23, 2021 in Fishers, surrounded by her family.

Gwen was born in Norton, Virginia, on February 2, 1950 to Ellen and Billy Potter. Gwen, or Geri to many, spent her childhood in the coal mining town of Osaka, Virginia, with her younger brothers, Tom and Terry. The family moved to Jonesboro, Indiana, when she was in sixth grade. She attended Mississinewa High School, where she was a member of the school newspaper and graduated with honors in 1968. She studied history at Taylor University, and then got her master of arts from Ball State University in 1973.  Her parents returned to Osaka in 1976, and Gwen and her family visited them often. Gwen loved to go to an annual fall crafts fair there.

She married Bob Tetrick on June 5, 1971.  They moved to Daleville, Indiana, in 1973, building a house there a few years later.  Her son John and daughter Megan were both born and raised in Daleville.  Gwen was active in Daleville Christian Church, and later Park Place Church of God in Anderson. Gwen was always involved in her children’s school activities, going on field trips and attending marching band competitions and concerts. She became the librarian at Daleville Elementary School after returning to Ball State for a certificate in library science.

Gwen was hired as the media specialist at Stony Creek Elementary School in Noblesville in 1997, and the family moved there. She retired from the school in 2014.  Gwen had also worked at the Hamilton East Public Library in both Noblesville and Fishers.

She loved books, and was always reading one, or ten at once. Children’s literature and Civil War history were among her favorites. Gwen shared her passion for books and reading with others, inventing creative ways to get children to read. She thought learning should be fun, and had a mischievous side, too (once she even filled an entire classroom with sand for a beach party). She always kept careful watch over her students who needed extra help in the classroom and outside of school. Community and giving to others were important to her, and wherever she was she found ways to help those in need around her.

Gwen loved to travel, and took four trips overseas to visit her daughter in Ukraine, Ecuador, Turkey, and Kazakhstan.

Her parents and brother, Terry, preceded her in death.
