Elbert E. Elliott "Dr. E", 88, of Carmel, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at his home at Independence Village of Carmel. He was born June 18, 1937 to Monous and Antha Lou (Jackson) Elliott in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Elbert met Barbara Wallace when they were high school freshmen. He tripped her on the stairs to get her attention. ln 1956 they married and began their 64 1/2 year journey together. For over fifty years they invested their lives in a calling from God Almighty to proclaim the Good News, and help people through ministry in churches, colleges and universities. They made many good friends all over the world. Dr. E looked for the good in others, gave encouragement, and help to those who needed it.
Elbert graduated high school in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, earned his BS from Oklahoma Baptist University, a M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a M.S. from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. From 1987-2005 Elbert was the Senior Minister at First Baptist Church in Mattoon, Illinois and from 2006-2020 he was the Provost and Professor of Pulpit Communications, Biblical Studies, and Pastoral Ministries at Trinity College. Elbert was an artist and enjoyed painting landscapes, stills, and portraits.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and his brother David. Elbert is survived by his daughters, Debbie (Steve) Keyes and Tami (Dennon) McMillan, and son, Dave (Krissie) Elliott. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Missy (Brian), Rachelle (Kevin), Dennon II (Melissa), Marcie (Joe), Josh (Myra), Megan (Mark), Karmen (Bethany), and Emily (CJ). Great PaPa's family tree continues to blossom with 16 great grandchildren that he loved dearly and were the apple of his eye. A good day for Elbert was spending time with his family, especially all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved playing games, taking them places and making root beer floats. Every day was “Super Duper” to him!
