Dr. John Stanley Kostin

March 9, 1934 – June 12, 2025

Dr. John Stanley Kostin was a devoted husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was born in Detroit Michigan to John and Constance Kostin who have preceded him.

A quintessential, patriotic, self-made man, John joined the United States Marines Corps at age 18 and later enrolled at Nebraska Wesleyan University on the advice of a Marine Corps Chaplain. At freshman orientation he met Marilyn Ann Sundquist, and they were married September 8, 1956, starting a family shortly thereafter. He graduated from Bowman Gray Medical School in Winston-Salem, NC, completed his internship at the Public Health Service Hospital in New Orleans, LA and residency at the Public Health Service Hospital on Staten Island, NY with a year at Memorial-Sloan Kettering in New York City. He was assigned to the Public Health Service hospital in 1967 Detroit, MI. In 1970 he moved to Kalamazoo, MI where he maintained a successful, private surgical practice until retiring in 2004. He was greatly admired and loved by his patients, who frequently bestowed him with custom-made gifts and even a puppy named Flicka.

He and Marilyn spent their retirement years traveling the world, visiting many well-known locales via land, sea, and air. He will always be remembered for his smile, infectious laugh, generosity, kindness and worldly advice. He was always interested in learning. He loved art, history, home-made meals, movies, travel, and of course, his family, of which he was immensely proud.

John is lovingly remembered by Marilyn, his wife of nearly 69 years; his children: Kathryn (Lawrence), Paula (Mark), Michael (his angel in heaven), David, AnnaRebecca (Sean) and Elisabeth (Phil); his grandchildren: Margaret (also in heaven), Melanie, Marley, Chandler, Erik, Cristina, Audrey, Olivia, Marilyn, Alexander, and Elisabeth; and great grandchildren Weston and Drew.

Visitation will be at 1pm, Saturday, June 21, at Pelan Funeral Services, 204 N. Main Street, Lyons, NE, with a 2pm funeral service at Memorial United Methodist Church, 305 E. Pearl Street, Lyons, NE. Interment will be held at Lyons Cemetery.
